About
the long way round
I'm Dila — a luxury travel advisor in Zurich, and the person behind Unravel.
I grew up in Istanbul, moved to Zurich at fifteen, finished school in Saint Moritz, and have since lived in Como and in Japan. That's roughly the whole idea behind this: I've never been very good at staying in one place, and I've gotten quite good at working out what makes a place worth the trip.
I studied at EHL and started in sales at The Alpina in Gstaad, running roadshows and meeting travel agents from everywhere. I stayed a year, and by the end of it I knew I wanted to be on their side of the table — the side that travels. Before hospitality there was banking, marketing and events, an artist residency in Japan, and enough time in F&B that I can run a La Marzocco like it's a toy. None of it was a straight line and all of it turned out to be useful.
I plan trips full-time as a Luxury Travel Advisor, affiliated with Beyond Travel in Los Angeles. Unravel is mine — the name comes from unravelling the world, which is an invitation more than a slogan.
Why use an agent at all
This is the part I most want people to hear, especially in Europe and Asia where the idea is less familiar. Booking through me does not cost you anything extra. The rate is the hotel's rate.
What you get on top of it comes from relationships I've spent years building: upgrades at check-in, early arrival, late check-out, breakfast, a credit to spend on property, and a real person the hotel already knows advocating for you before you land. When something goes wrong — and occasionally something does — that relationship is the difference between a form and a phone call.
Off the clock
I have played tennis since I was a child, competitively, and I still get on a court as often as the diary allows. I ski, and I would live in the mountains if the work let me. I paint, and I know more about art history than is strictly useful at dinner. I understand more languages than I speak well.
I'm also building Unravel out. Its aim is to gather people together in different parts of the world, a different city each time. Different countries, different languages, different lines of work, and by the second course nobody is talking about what they do. If you've been to one, you know that is the best part.
